Leaving Some Room for Imagination
Press Release
After the success of our dual exhibition “Nostalgy•Beijing Paris” with Man Yanling and Wang Yu, we are going to open a second dual exhibition entitled “Leaving Some Room for Imagination” at the end of the summer of 2009.
One of the participating artists this time is Li Jikai, from Sichuan, a representative artist of the “Cartoon Generation”; the other one is Wang Jinsong who works in different fields such as photography, oil painting, ink and wash, etc. Unlike the last dual exhibition, we don’t put emphasis on the discovery of the similarity in the two artists; instead, we pay more attention on their differences, such as differences of styles and focusing points of their art, with a view to research on the influence that different times have put on them, and to discover their common points in a deeper sense.
Every epoch possesses its own character, and artists grown up in different periods have their own particularity too. As a representative artist from the 70’s, Li Jikai tells his stories from a personal, microcosmic angle in his paintings that are filled with researches on the Self, which shows some attitude of his generation on autognosis. Yet Wang Jinsong from the 60’s leans more towards a macroscopic narration in which he concerns himself more with social subjects. His attitude and opinions towards things are implicated in the figures and expression forms that he chooses.
Either microcosmic or macroscopic, both of them reflect the times that they belong to. Be it with an indistinct self identity, or with an endless spoof of reality, the social and humanistic characters of art itself make a definite connection between art creations and social changes in an overall environment. These two artists from 60’s and 70’s, how do they actually express themselves in a language which belongs to themselves but also to their time, how do they deal with the different impact their epoch has made on art, how do they reflect on each other even as they became trend leaders separately in their period? We’ll leave some room for the imagination of our audience.
