New Age Gallery, which is committed to discovering and introducing to the public young contemporary artists, is going to hold a group exhibition entitled “Now-Future” for young contemporary artists in August 2009.

Now-Future, as a title, is indeed an embodiment of the gallery’s guideline, namely, to
devote to discovering talented young artists in the broader context of the future for the young artists and for contemporary art in China as well.

The contributors to this exhibition, as artists born in the 70s or the 80s, concentrated on new themes with new artistic expression, voice their reflections about our age and our life.

Xu Xiangdong, “following the form”, highlights such quality of “emptiness” and “negative form” in art, in addition to the rich “form” and “image” generated in chaos. The unique models elicit rich association, imagination, reflection on the universe, and feelings about the predicament of human life. Zhong Shan, resorts to “art of double image” as the artistic medium, namely, to present and to mirror by juxtaposing of double image the correspondence between two different facets of the same image, so as to the reveal complex and flexible forms the image takes on in space and time, in the real world and the virtual one, in reality and imagination… Jia Gang excels in bringing forth various postures by means of rich codified body language. “The figures in my paintings are invariably cast in the image of ‘new Chinese’, lump, with long and slender eyebrows, slanting eyes, a small mouth, two slightly rouged cheeks, widow’s peak narrow shoulders.”(Jia Gang) You Jin, as an expert of “garbled symbols”, by building a gloomy, elevating and destructive atmosphere in rich colors, confronts us with the reality in which crisis and dangers loom large in the seeming prosperity of science, communication, economy and consumerism. Zhang Yongzheng’s artistic language of “mysterious rhythm” (“mysterious” denotes the quality of being mysterious and inexplicable; “rhythm” refers to the rhythmic movement of the line of force, signifying the eternity of the universe, nature, and the human race), by featuring the mysterious pulse of life. It is based on the inherent spirit of freedom in Chinese calligraphy, accompanied with the essence of Chinese “Five Elements” and ancient Chinese philosophy for the observation and review of all the creatures, so as to reveal the circle of life, active movement, dynamic and regular transformation in the kingdom of art composed by Yin and Yang, the heaven and the earth, the soul and the universe. Xia Hang, a grownup boy who enjoys “game”, brings us sculptures for “play”, as each can be “assemble” and “disassembled”. Each time they are inserted, connected and combined, new images are continually generated or transformed to form a magical world. In Zheng Lu’s works, “characters and sculpture” (combination of characters, their charm and sculpture as a whole) Such sculptures naturally become a medium for life experience and artistic expression. Therefore, the charm of words and their connotation are highlighted, and "emptiness" and "hollowness", "Yin" and "Yang" are reflected as well. The illuminated works thus begin their journey of inexhaustible changes and extension, wandering between "to be or not to be" and "to be fantasy or to be reality". Hu Hua’s “funny art”, characterized with richly loaded symbols, cold colors based on black, white and grey, creates a grave, rational, heavy, and apathetic atmosphere in which the artist remains a detached observer, pondering the bustling crowd, exploring curiously the self, the human race and the universe. Luo Tiantian, from the perspective of “self-examination and only-child reality”, deals with the enlarged self in the real world or another magnified self, or the more skillful, perfect and idolized recast of the imaginary image of “the self”. Her artistic realm constitutes the real picture of the life reality of the only child generation in China.

The exhibition will be a collection of the recent tour de force of these artists, and will surely take you on an exceptional journey of artistic discoveries.
